Description

Most plate solvers identify this target as  IC 5146, which specifically refers to the cluster of stars (9.5 mag) in the bright Ha-rich nebula. The open star cluster is also known as Collinder 470.

Sharpless 125 (Sh2-125) is the catalog entry for the entire Cocoon nebula and Barnard 168 (B168) refers to the dark nebula surrounding the IC5146/Col 470 star cluster.   Edward Emerson Barnard, a gifted observational astronomer, discovered this nebula in a photograph taken on October 11, 1893 using the 6" Willard lens at the Lick Observatory in California (USA).   B168 forms a dark, dusty trail behind the Cocoon that projects westward over a great distance.  Its very prominent in the wide-field image taken with the RedCat51 telescope (shown below; the high-resolution version is Revision C).
